Biography

Sarah Breed was christened in Sundon, Bedfordshire, on 27 March 1796^[1]. Her parents were Mark Breed and Hannah Breed, née Osborn.

Sarah Breed probably married Joseph Riley in Sundon on 24 December 1814^[2]. They had at least three children, Mary in 1816^[3], Henry in 1818^[4], and William in 1821^[5], who were all christened in Sundon. They may have had three more: Sarah^[7], Susannah^[8], and Joseph^[9] (see Research Notes).

Sarah probably died before 1835^[11].

Research Notes

Between 1825 and 1847 four children whose parents were Joseph and Sarah Riley were christened in Caddington, Bedfordshire/Hertfordshire, which is 6 miles south of Sundon^{[7][8][9][14]}. The youngest, Elizabeth, was born too late to be the child of our Sarah. Her mother's maiden name was recorded as Bone, which is almost certainly a mistake for Bunyan. There is a wedding record for Joseph Riley and Sarah Bunyan in Caddington in 1835^[11], and Bunyons/Bunyans appear in the Riley household in later censuses.

However the presence of Sundon-born William in the household, and described as 'Son', in 1851^[15] suggests that these are not two entirely different families, but that perhaps Sarah (Breed) Riley had died at some point before 1835, and then Joseph married Sarah Bunyan.

But as Joseph's children appear to have been born in Caddington from 1824 on (see daughter Hannah's entry in the 1851 census^[15]), and there is no other evidence of Sarah (Breed) Riley outside Sundon, it's possible that some of these children were not hers.

(Also do not confuse her with the Sarah Breed, daughter of Thomas and Lydia, christened in Sutton in 1786, or the Sarah Breed, daughter of Francis and Elizabeth, christened in Biggleswade in 1803.)
