Biography

Margery was the daughter of Ralph Brereton.[1][2][3] Her mother was probably Johanna, who is recorded as Ralph's widow in a document of 1534.[4] Her birth date and birth place are not known: her father had interests in Flintshire, Wales and Cheshire, England.[5][6] Margery was her father's main heir.[1][2][3]

Margery married twice. Her first husband was John Holford.[1][2][7] A dispensation for the marriage was dated 1506.[1][2][8] Ormerod in his History of Cheshire gives a marriage date of 20 April 1507.[3] They had four children:

John Holford died before 28 November 1548 when Margery married again.[9] Her second husband was Henry Sacheverell[1][2][9] and the wedding was at St Matthew's, Morley, Derbyshire.[9] She and her husband sued her son Thomas for her dower rights.[10]

Margery was buried on 16 October 1553 at Morley, Derbyshire.[11]

Margery (Brereton) Sacheverell is descendant of Magna Carta Surety Baron Saher de Quincy in a Richardson-documented trail to Gateway Ancestor Obadiah Bruen (Magna Carta Ancestry, vol. I, pages 331-333 BRUEN) that was badged by the Magna Carta project 27 February 2021. See the Magna Carta Trails on John Bruen's profile to view the profiles in those trails.
See Base Camp for more information about identified Magna Carta trails and their status. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

Upson saving, received the following automated "Check data" warning":
  • "A mother's birth date (Brereton-15 born 1486) should not be more than 67 years before the birth date of one of her children (Sacherell-6 born 1554).
  • "A mother's death date (Brereton-15 died 16 Oct 1553) should not be before one of her children's birth dates (Sacherell-6 born 1554)."

As noted previously, it is not known that they had a child. I'll detach Sacherell-6, born 1554.

I was working on a different error... marriage after death. There is a freereg citation for marriage to Henry in 1548. I'll change Henry's death date from 1544 (which is not sourced in his biography - Richardson does not give a death date for him).

the biography appears to be from the Marlyn Lewis database, which needs to have its sources confirmed (see the Magna Carta Project Reliable Sources page).

I looked her up in Richardson's Royal Ancestry (volume I, page 586 BRUEN 14) and he does not mention any dates other than she and her first husband, John Holford, being "legatees in the 1530 will of her father", John's death about 1546, and Margery's marriage "in or before 1547" to Henry (or Harry) Sacheverell, Knt." Richardson lists three sons and a daughter for Margery and John; no children listed with Harry (but does not state "no issue").

edit - corrected typo in link

I was wondering about the same thing concerning the dates. I doubt Margaret would be having a baby at 68. This is of interest to me however because Elizabeth Sacherell born 1584 is my 10th great grandmother. I would love to continue her line but I will stop here until more accurate information can be obtained.

The third child listed here (Sacherell-6) was born much too late to be the child of Margery. It has been suggested that there might be another Henry to add a generation.

Margery is not likely having a baby at age 68. Some sources posit a middle Henry.
