Biography

Elizabeth Brereton was born around 1468. [Elizabeth had a son William who was 14 in 1527 (18 Henry VIII) therefore born in 1513, if she was 45 (est max age to give birth) when she had him she was born in 1468].

Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir Andrew Brereton of Brereton and Agnes DeLeigh, daughter of Robert Ligh of Adlington.[1] Her parents' other children were:[1]

  1. Sir William Brereton, Lord Chief Justice of Ireland, husband of (1) Alice, daughter of John Savage and (2) Elenor, daughter to Sir Randoll Brereton of Ipstones, buried 4 February, 1541, at Kilkenny.[2]
  2. Katherine wife of Sir Thomas Smith of Hough;
  3. Alice wife of William Morton of Morton; and
  4. Maud (Matilda) wife of John Damport of Damport (Davenport of Davenport[2]).
  5. Ellen, wife of John Fitton of Gawsworth;[2]
  6. John Brereton of Leek in Staff.[2]
  7. Andrew[2]
  8. Matthew[2]
  9. Johanna, wife of Laurence Dutton of Marshe, brother and heir of Sir Thomas Dutton of Dutton[2]

After her mother Agnes died, her father married Anne Done. They had no children.[1] Elizabeth's father, Andrew, also had two illegitimate daughters:[1]

  1. Katherine, wife of William Bowyer of Knipsley, and
  2. Elizabeth, wife of John Smith of Oldlaugh. "John Smith of Oldhaugh H7 = Elizabeth, base daughter to Sir Andrew Brereton who died 1549."[3] [Base = illegitimate]

Elizabeth married Philip Legh of Bothes, esq, after 14 August, 1506, as on that day he enfeoffs Elizabeth's brother and nephew, William Brereton, esq, son and heir of Andrew Brereton, and William Brereton, son and heir of the said William, among other people, of his manor of Knottisford Bothes, Northebury Bothes and Knottisford, and all his other properties in the vills of Knottisford Bothes, Ollerton', Moburley, Rautherstorne, Myllyngton', and Bolynton' or elsewhere in co Chester which Anne late wife of John Legh esq, holds for life, excepting certain properties including those recently granted for life to Elizabeth who he is going to marry, and who is the daughter of Anne Brereton, late the wife of Andrew Brereton, kt.[4] Philip Ligh of Bouthes was the son of Sir John Legh of Bouthes, slain in 1459 at Bloreheath,[5] and Jane (Joan), daughter and heir of Sir Thomas Ashton of Aston, knight, in co. Lancashire.[6] Elizabeth and Phillip had seven children:[5]

  1. Sir John Leigh of Bouthes, was 14 in 18 Henry VIII, married Jane, sister of Sir William Snead, and died 1558;[7]
  2. Jane married to (1) Richard Starky of Stretton and (2) Stanley of Bickerstaff;
  3. Ellin married to Sir Rafe Lecester;
  4. Anne (or Amy) who died without children;
  5. William
  6. Edward
  7. Roger

Phillip Leigh, who was heir to his nephew, died 2 December, 18 Henry 8 and an Inquisition post mortem was held in 18 Henry VIII.[7]

Elizabeth then married John Carrington.[1]
