Mary Maxine Olson, 92, of Brainerd, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, January 10, 2015, at the Good Samaritan Society – Woodland residence in Brainerd.

Mary was born on November 11, 1922, in Macy, Nebraska, to Harry and Jennie Brewer, and was one of six siblings. She was married to Rev. Melford Olson of rural New Auburn, Wisconsin, on September 1, 1945. They were married for nearly 63 years.

After graduating as valedictorian from Walthill High School, Mary moved to Minneapolis. Having felt the call of God on her life to the ministry, she attended and graduated from North Central Bible Institute (now, North Central University). She met Melford there when they were both freshmen, and dated briefly before he was drafted into the U.S. Army during WWII.

In a wonderful story of true love, Mary waited for Melford for the three years he was away at war, and they married soon after he returned at the end of the war. They left behind beautiful love letters from this long-distance romance. Melford went on to also graduate from NCBI, and he and Mary then pastored Assemblies of God churches for over fifty years in various cities in Minnesota, North Dakota and Wisconsin, including the Brainerd Assembly (now Heritage Assembly of Baxter).

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Melford Olson; daughter, Marlene Olson Leoni; her parents, Harry and Jennie Brewer; her sister, Reva Brewer Wingett; and two brothers, Elwood Brewer and Victor Brewer. She is survived by her two sons, Darrel (Sheila) Olson of Baxter, MN; and Denny (Karolyn) Olson of Nixa, Missouri; six grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and her brothers, Merrel Brewer and Gerald Brewer.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 14, at 11:00AM at Heritage Assembly of Baxter, 13242 Berrywood Dr., Baxter, MN, 56425. Friends may come on Tuesday, January 13 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home, BRAINERD CHAPEL, and one hour prior to the service, Wednesday at the church.

Mary will be remembered for many things, including her piano playing and great sense of humor. Her family wishes to thank all who have been such a blessing to both Melford and Mary all the years of their marriage and ministry. ^[1]
