Biography

• The last confirmed record of residence I have for Menno and Lydia is the 1930 U.S. Federal Census - Ward 14, Detroit, Wayne, Michigan. The last record I show for Menno is his Michigan death Certificate and subsequent obituary indicate (possibly) the couple's formal residence at the time of his death was still Michigan....even though he died in a Kitchener/Waterloo Regional Facility. His Obit is written from Waterloo, which is where he and Lydia are buried. The distance between the two locations is about 120 miles...so point-to-point travel was certainly plausible. So I assume - (though still lacking record of event) that Lydia likewise lived out the remainder of her years (she died in 1938) the year following Menno, and is buried at Mount Hope as is he.

On April 12th, 1876, he was married to LYDIA, daughter of DAVID and HANNAH (KOLB) BRICKER. She was bom April 17th, 1851.

He is a Miller by trade but at present he resides in Berlin Township where he is engaged in the livery business.

Their family consists of four children, namely:

SHANTZ, MENNO S., son of the late MOSES and SUSANNAH SHANTZ, was born near Waterloo, Ontario, October 11, 1852; and died at the Kitchener & Waterloo Hospital January 4, 1937; aged 84 years 2 months 24 days.

On April 12, 1876, he was United in holy marriage to LYDIA BRICKER who remains to mourn her loss.

This union was blessed with 3 sons and 1 daughter (ABNER of Waterloo, MELVIN of Detroit, Mrs. C.F. GIBBS of Toronto, and PEARLOUS who predeceased his father in death 26 years ago).

4 grandchildren also survive, along with 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

He was baptized and received into Mennonite Church fellowship a few weeks before his death.

"We praise the Lord for his testimony of faith before he passed on."

Funeral services were held at Ratz and Bechtel Funeral Home. Services conducted by J.B. Martin. Text: John 6:68.
