Biography

Daniel Bridwell's daughter was Rebecca Bridwell. A newspaper article, near Rebecca's death, says she was born was born Feb 22, 1805, in Prince William Co. VA, and that she came to Nelson Co. KY with her father, when she was five years old.

During a visit to Nelson Co. (Feb 2005) I found that, in 1807, Daniel Bridwell bought property on Cox's creek, from Anoch Stone. But, apparently Daniel, of Nelson Co., KY, sold property as early as 1797.

Deed records indicate his wife was Rachel. The records of several neighboring Bridwells were found but I don't yet have many of the relationships.

I also saw records of his estate processed Feb 1843. His executor was Isaac Miller. When the estate was administered, Daniel had cash notes from several people. Benj Stallard, Joshua Hobbs, Elisha Wells, George Wells, Lemuel Stone, Jane Miller, Hezekiah Hughes, Samuel Briscoe. He had accounts with Ennis Jewel, Isaac Miller, Spottswood Wells, Coleman Wells, Mary King, Bernard Bridwell, Moses Jewell, John Bell, Bernard Stone Edmund Terrell.

At his estate sale, purchasers included: Samuel Briscoe, William Hobbs, Abner King, James Bridwell, Hayden Bridwell, Mahala Bridwell, Isaac Miller, J. Miller. These were neighbors, of course, but I mention the names because many are familiar relatives of Presley Bridwell.

The estate record for Daniel Bridwell makes reference to the Little Union Baptist Church. A listing from The Little Union Baptist Church Cemetery tells that this cemetery, is the burial place of Presley and Margaret Bridwell. New Salem Cemetery is on the Nelson boundary with Bullitt Co. It includes an Elizabeth Bridwell b. 1807.

I found The Bridwell Family in America by Erbon W. Wise published,1968 when I visited the Fort Wayne Library in June 1999. The book tells of earlier Bridwells but General Wise was unable to attach Daniel to an earlier family. From The Bridwell Family in America by Erbon W. Wise 1968, I have Daniel’s children:

Nancy m. William Childs

Rebecca m. Samuel M. Grable

Jane m. Daniel Wigginton

Deborah m. Archibald Patterson

Daniel Bridwell ... [1] Nelson Co. KY

Real Estate

Daniel of Nelson Co., KY sold property as early as 1797. From Duncan family recordings (on internet): 5-378: 14 Nov. 1797, Daniel Bidwell and wife Rachel (X) to Henry Duncan, both Nelson Co. KY, £54, 30 acres "at least" on E. fork of Simpsons Creek, part of land Cornelius Drake purchased of Hite Family 1 April 1793. Wit. James Chambers, Thomas Bayers. (FHL film 482,735)

In 1807, Daniel bought property on Cox’s Creek from Enoch Stone. The property is apparently not far from the Nelson Co., properties on Cox’s Creek that were sold by Henry and Sarah Bridwell to George Wells in 1817, sold by George and Nancy Bridwell to Joseph Foreman in 1811 and (bordering Hibbs) sold by Presley in 1831. (Samuel Miller Grable’s father died in 1805. His administrator was Joseph Forman and Samuel's step-father was Jonathan Hibbs – Bridwell neighbors.)

15 Apr 1817, Henry Bridwell and Sarah of Bullett Co., sold to George Wells of Nelson Co. 220 acres for $2120 on east fork of Coxes creek. Part of John Peyton Harrisons 1000 acre survey. Conveyed by William Adams and Nancy to Henry Bridwel by deed 20 Oct 1816.

In 1811, George Bridwell and Nancy his wife sold to Joseph Foremen 100 acres on Coxes Creek for $500 part of John Harrisons survey. Goes to corner of Presley Bridwell. Isaac Bridwell estate

Apr 1823 (in Bardstown) John Bridwell is mentioned as having a note. Admin was Abner King. Witneses Jesse Stone, Joshua Hobbs, Jn Hobbs.

Research

In the Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 27, No. 3, there appears an abstract of the early records of Chappawamsic Baptist Church in Stafford County; a Daniel Bridwell appears among the names of those who were members in 1800 (with the notation "dismissed 1806"), along with the names of Presley Bridwell, Cuthbert Bridwell, and Elijah Wigginton (Daniel Bridwell's daughter Jane married Fielding Wigginton, whose father Seth Wigginton was a brother of Elijah). (from Christopher Handy - Handy-530)

Simon Bridwell, who was a Revolutionary War soldier, had several descendents who lived near Daniel Bridwell. Felding Bridwell who married patsy Briscoe, dau of John Brisco received land, which went to the corner of Presley Bridwell property. (Also slaves were mentioned.) I don't know if "The Bridwell Family in America" mentioned him.

A Spencer County Genweb biography tells us that James Bridwell was born 1777 in Spencer Co., KY of Presley Bridwell who was born in VA. An KyRootsWeb site with an 1860 census shows James Bridwell was the son of Fielding Bridwell and Martha "Patsy" Briscoe. Before Coming to Henderson County, James Bridwell married (1) Emily Jewell, the daughter of James' stepfather, Presley Jewell and his first wife, Nancy Skinner, 29 Jan 1852 Bullitt Co KY. Emily died 1 Oct 1853 and is buried at Shady Grove Cemetery in Poole. James Bridwell married (2) Eliza Ann Thornberry 18 Jun 1854 Henderson Co KY and they became the parents of 15 children. James died 26 May 1901 and he is buried at Shady Grove Cemetery. (see also https://www.geni.com/people/Simon-Bridwell/6000000009849712737 Fielding and Spencer Bridwell, included in Daniel's estate have a different ancestry than Hayden. )

http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~cpalmer/bridwell/preface.htm gives Descendents of Simon Bridwell, Rev War Soldier. World Connect for Simon Bridwell shows several descendant names that appear in Daniel's estate record. But the listing does not include Hayden.

Noah Bridwell-289 was the father the Hayden Bridwell, who was born 1825. Research on Noah's father, Bailey Bridwell, is shared at Find A Grave: Memorial #181798973. With Noah's marriage to Nancy Cuppy, the geography of this family overlaps. But Noah's ancestry, through Bailey Bridwell, is (so far) not found consistent with the descendants of Spencer Bridwell whose descendants include Briscoe, Jewel and others. A correspondent mentioned another Hayden Bridwell born 1807. This is more likely the Hayden that appears in Daniel's estate records, though ancestry for this earlier Hayden is not known.

Indiana Connection

Exploring the profile of [Bridwell-160|Martha Bridwell] led to research of Doctor, and Noah Bridwell of Lawrence Co. IN. They were millers who had come from Kentucky. Noah, in fact married Nancy Cuppy of Cox's Creek, Nelson Co. KY. I recognize the name Cuppy, from my Nelson Co. research. Earlier research of Noah is shown at World Connect

Because ancestors of Hayden Bridwell, in Indiana, born 1825, are not a good match to the ancestors of the Bridwell's etc found at Daniel's estate sale, they remain a curiousity, but have not been connected.

Rebecca married May 3, 1823, to Samuel Miller Grable. They soon moved to Columbia, IN, for it is there that their daughter Eliza was born. The remaining children were born in Kentucky. The newspaper article indicates Rebecca moved to Louisville in 1836. Samuel bought property in Jefferson Co., KY, from his son, Alfred Grable, and it is there they spent their later years. Rebecca is buried in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville..

World Connect for Cornelius Drake This may be connection for Daniel's wife. Pair this with, "The Descendants of Governor Thomas Welles of Connecticut and his ..., Part 2 By Donna Holt Siemiatkoski" It shows Daniel Bidwell and maybe not be the same one.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:
