Abel, Job and Caleb BRIGGS, these were three brothers, natives of East Greenwich, Rhode Island.. Abel BRIGGS born in 1777, married Martha DICKINSON of Troy. They settled on land bought by Abel and Job, adjoining the POTTER place on the north. He died there in 1842, survived by his second wife, Betsey RIPPEY. He had ten children, Barry, Gardner, Hiram, Eliza, Waity, Mercy, Warren, Lydia, Mary and Israel by his first marriage, and by the second, four more, Andrew, Martha, Daniel and Harry. Hiram and Eliza alone, remain in the county. Gardner died of starvation in the rebel prison at Andersonville, GA. [3] [4]

Note: Some Sources have an Israel Briggs, B:1810, as Abel's Son possibly this Individual changed His Name to Joseph L. Briggs and migrated to Michigan along with His Brothers & Sisters in the early 1830's. Joseph L. Briggs (1810-1841) died in Oakland Co, MI at the early age of 31-years. His Marriage to Hester Fisher was the First Recorded Marriage (1836) in Livingston Co, MI.

Abel married Martha Dickinson about 1800. She was born in 1783, possibly in Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. [5] In 1820, the family was in Middlesex, New York, which at the time was a part of Ontario County. [6]

Martha died in 1824 in Yates County. [7] Abel married second, Elizabeth “Betsey” Rippey, probably before 1830. [8] In 1832 this area became part of the Town of Potter. [9]

Abel Briggs died December 21, 1842 in the Town of Potter in Yates County, New York. He left a widow Elizabeth Briggs, Elisa Trimmer wife of Anthony Trimmer Jr. of Benton, Gardner of Italy, Hiram of Potter and Jacob, Andrew, Martha, Daniel, and Harry last five minors under the age of 21 and Warren Briggs of Utica, Mercy Shattuck wife of Samuel D. Shattuck, Lydia Briggs, Mary Briggs, and the survivors of Waty Hall [10]: John Hall, Harry Hall, Phebe Hall, and Columbus Hall, the three last named being minors under twenty one all of McComb County Michigan. [11]
