Biography

Thomas Briggs was born on ~August 23, 1554 in St James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England. His father was Thomas Brigge (~1530 - ).

Thomas married Alice UNKNOWN (~1554 - ~1618).

Their son was Henrie Briggs (1574 - >1625).

Thomas married Elizabeth Mounteyn (1554 - 1625) in 1573 in London, Middlesex.

Thomas died on ~August 14, 1625 in St. Magnus, London aged 70.

Research note

Thomas died probably in August of 1653, Sulgrave, Northampton, England perhaps following a fire. From House of Commons Journal Volume 7: 22 August 1653, Journal of the House of Commons: volume 7: 1651-1660, pp. 305-306, there is a granting of a petition of relief from a significant loss by fire for Thomas Briggs and others of 1,738 Pounds.

His will was written August 12, 1652 and proved on May 5, 1653.

Thomas’ will quite clearly shows the relationships to his son Edward and Edwards wife and children; his wife Alice; and his deceased son Henrie’s family. Given on one of the merged profiles. This death date would make Thomas almost 100 years old. Not impossible, but questionable.

( AT THIS POINT THE CONNECTION TO HENRIE BRIGGS IS UNCLEAR. THERE WERE so MANY BRIGGS DESCENDANTS TO SHARE THE FAMILY LANDS, that some SONS WERE FORCED TO SEEK THEIR OWN WAY. This reference proposes the connection to Henrie Briggs)

Clerkenwell is Middlesex not Essex as in your notes. Am correcting notes

The two links under Sources do not resolve. The third item listed under Sources has nothing to say about the Henry who emigrated, and the writer says that Thomas Briggs listed, married to Elizabeth Monteyn, clearly has a son Henry who was the mathematician of Oxford. Any other sources?

"Thomas’ will quite clearly shows the relationships to his son Edward..."; Why not list Edward as a son?

I have Elizabeth Mounteyn as his wife and not his mother- she was born in the same year as him which makes parentage impossible.

Parentage and spouse should probably be left blank until more clear sources are found.

The 1693 death of someone born in 1554 is um... well, as far as I know, impossible? 139 years old?
