Richard was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, about 1530. He appears in the Visitation of Hertfordshire as "Richard Briggs of Halifax, co. York" the father of David Briggs of London, merchant.[1] Richard's father was William Brigge of Old Town, Wadsworth, Halifax, mentioned in a deed of 1563[2] and in Richard's will.
Richard went to London and became a merchant. He died there in 1584, leaving a will dated 7 May 1584 "Richard Brigge of London chapman" and mentioning wife Jane, sons David, John, and Richard, and daughter Judith. He left to "David my eldest sonne" lands and tenements at Olde Towne (in Wadsworth, Halifax) in the tenure of his father William Brigge, and another property in the tenure of his brother Henry.[3] One of the supervisors of the will was Henry Farrar of Halifax gentleman, probably the same Henry Farrar mentioned as "my cosen" in his son David's will.
