Biography

The parents for Samuel Briggs had been incorrectly listed as Clement Briggs and Joan Allen (as of 6/30/2015); they have been removed now.

Samuel Briggs was the child of John Briggs and Katherine (Unknown) Briggs.[1] He may have been born in Sandwich, Massachusetts, but that is unknown.

He married Elizabeth Ellis about 1664 (daughter of John and Elizabeth (Freeman) Ellis.[2]

Their children, recorded in Sandwich as Briggs, were:[1]

  • Elizabeth, b April 3, 1665[3]
  • Benit, b October 14, 1667[3]
  • Ebenezer, b June 9, 1671[3]
  • Samuel, b 12.12 1673 (February 12, 1673/4)[3]
  • Hannah, b February 14, 1675/6[3]
  • John, d Rochester 1727, age 59 years

Samuel granted land to his son, John, February 11, 1714;[1] he died sometime thereafter but no further information has been found.

Samuel Biggs was of Sandwich MA. and his children were born there.[4]

NOTE: Samuel is NOT the son of Clement & Joan (Allen) Briggs

Briggs-2910 and Briggs-601 appear to represent the same person because: Use the details of Briggs-601. Thank you.

The only source I see in my notes is the book

Edna Anne Hannibal, "John Briggs of Sandwich, Massachusetts and His Descendants" (Palo Alto, CA: the author, 1962)

When I say "after" a date it usually means I knew about a probate record, or some other record that he was alive on that date. Frankly, I don't know why I used this date back in the early 1990s.

I looked for rochester MA records, and Samuel Briggs records, on AmericanAncestors and Ancestry without much success.

There is a death date of 2 Feb 1688 in Rochester for a Samuel Briggs, but that may be some other Samuel.

The two profiles may not be a match. Please see the source and info I added to Briggs-1528. The mother on this profile is likely incorrect, and possibly should be the same as on -1528. The siblings may belong to a different set of parents.

I added a source to John Briggs-440 that supports SOME of the children listed, but Samuel is not one of the ones included in the source.

Samuel's parents appear to be incorrect. Briggs-601 has the correct parents according to this source which I will add to his bio: John Briggs of Sandwich Mass and his Descendants.

The children and wife for this Samuel match the above cited reference. It says his death date is unknown, so November 1688 is probably the death date for Briggs-681.

We've got a problem: Briggs-1528 died the same day as this Briggs-681, but two different sets of parents are listed. Which is accurate? The parents? The death date/place?

Yes, but there's also an even lowered-numbered Samuel Briggs (but with different parents) who might also be a duplicate. See Briggs-681.
