A letter From Richard C Barnard to his sister Mary Barnard Cissel dated 5 November 1855 and posted from Blackwater, VA [1] contains the following: "Mr. Briggs, with whom I lived last year, died Saturday a week. I was with him at his death and during a great portion of his illness.He went to Baltimore to consult with Dr Backler who told him that his lungs were very much affected and he could give him but very little hope. Returning home, he was with a chill and lived only a few days. He was a good and kind and hospitable man and I was very much attached to him." His death on Saturday a week prior to 5 Nov would have been 27 October 1855. Joseph Briggs died in Sussex VA on this date - Joseph was Lois Frances' half brother.
In 1854, Richard C Barnard living and employed by Joseph Briggs at MILLBROOK PLANTATION. (now on Route 606 near the Southapmton and Sussex County Line.) Joseph Briggs was a son of William Briggs (1780-1845). William Briggs was married 3 times and had a total of 11 children, Lois Frances Briggs was the youngest of the 11 children. After her father's death she was raised by her brothers Dr William Briggs and Joseph Briggs. She was living with her brother Dr William Briggs in the 1850 census.
A second letter from Richard C Barnard dated 10 Dec 1855 and posted from Blackwater, VA announces Richard's intentions to marry Fannie Briggs. They were married 10 Jan 1856 in Blackwater, Sussex, VA.
