Disputed Surname

  • Mary ______[1]
  • Torrey NE Marriages: "WARREN, Arthur & [Mary] ____; by 1639; Weymouth {Bigelow-Howe 136; Warren (,4) 2; Warren (,5) 9; Warren (,8) 7; Woodstock 5:26; Reg. 84:451; Snow-Estes 1:76}"
  • Perhaps the following accounts for the rumors that Arthur's wife's surname was Briggs. However, even had he married Mrs. Briggs, that would not be her maiden name. From the Massacusetts Bay Colony Records:
    • 6th first month 1637/8 "The presentment of Arthur Warren, for keeping company wth Clement Briggs wife, was found to bee true."
    • 5th day 4th month 1638. "Clement Brigs his wife is enjoyned not to come into the company of Arthur Warren."
    • However, Clement's wife was named Joan, not Mary, and it was Joan who had been warned away.

Biography

Mary Unknown (possibly Briggs) was born about 1617 in England. (See Research Notes section).

Mary married Arthur Warren (1616–1658,) 1638[2] in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts, United States. The couple had four children including Arthur Warren, Jr., Abigail (Warren) Wright, Jacob Warren, Sr., and Joseph Warren.

She died 1647 in Weymouth, Norfolk, Massachusetts

Research Notes

  • Surname changed to Unknown pending confirmation of Briggs surname. The unsourced father, Walter Briggs (abt.1590-abt.1624), has been removed
  • Norfolk County, Massachusetts was created on March 26, 1793, by legislation signed by Governor John Hancock. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norfolk_County,_Massachusetts. Mary could not have lived in Norfolk COunty at the time of her death because it didn't then exist.
  • A Marye Briggs was bpt 18 Dec 1617 SAINT JOHN,HACKNEY,LONDON,ENGLAND. Caution: There is no evidence this Mary is the one who later married Arthur Warren; one baptism does not constitute proof of marriage.

Given the lack of evidence for her parents, should her connection to father, Walter Briggs, be marked uncertain?
