Biography

Uncertain Death and Children Information

Job Briggs' birth information is routinely shown as him having been born August 3, 1696, in Little Compton, Rhode Island. However, his death information is reported - in some cases by the same source - as different dates.

Birth

As far as can be ascertained, there was only one Job Briggs, born August 3, 1696, in Little Compton - he was the child of William and Elizabeth (Cook) Briggs. Rhode Island Vital Records reports his birth in the section of the records that dealt with William and Elizabeth Briggs.[1] In the line below his birth, it provides a death date for Job (presumably the same Job) as March 4, 1727.[1].

Death and Will Information

A bit farther down this same page, there are shown two Jobs born to a different William Briggs and his wife, Deborah (Church). The first was born February 4, 1725; he must have died young as there is also a Job Briggs, 2nd, reported with a birthdate of July 27, 1727. A death for this Job is reported as January _____, 1757.[1].
Farther still down the page, our Job is shown with his children. It states Job, born August 3, 1696, died February 28, 1739. After his name is shown, "Mary _____, his wife, ______, d June 23, 1769". [1] This date of death for Mary ties to other sources for Mary (Tallman) who married the Job Briggs of this profile. The children listed for him correspond with all the children shown below who were born in Little Compton.
Thus, on the same page of Rhode Island Vital Records, two different death dates are provided for what appears to be the same Job Briggs.
The Settlers of Beekman Patent reports the following regarding Job: his birthdate is consistent as August 3, 1696. It says he married Mary Tallman. His will was dated in Little Compton, February 25, 1726/7 and was proved April 18, 1727. (Note: If a will is proved, that means the individual is deceased.) In his will, Job mentions that his wife was pregnant. The same source (not the will) goes on to state that Job died "February 28, 1769, at Portsmouth, Rhode Island, and his widow died June 23, the same year".[2] Beekman gives its source as Bristol County Probate 5:10-12, but doesn't say if that relates to Job or Mary. Considering the month and day for his death are the same for one Rhode Island Vital Record for a Job, it appears 1769 was an error.
The will of Job Briggs was proved on 18 April 1727. It includes his sons, Oliver, Joseph, and Jeremiah, and his unborn child. There is an illegible section that appears to be covered by clear tape that doesn't copy well. One can barely make out "dotters Deborah." It appears there are two lines under the tape, and since it starts by speaking of daughters, Abigail is also probably listed, and possibly Bathsheba. The unborn child is mentioned twice, according to whether it is a boy or a girl. The will named his wife and brother-in-law, Esek Carr (wife of his sister, Deborah (Briggs) Carr (1693-1773)), as co-executors. An inventory of the estate was submitted, and the will proved on 18 Apr 1727.[3]
Genealogical and Family History of Western New York, reports that Job Briggs, son of William and Elizabeth (Cook) Briggs, was born August 3, 1696, and died February 28, 1739.[4] This ties to the Rhode Island Vital Record for the Job Briggs discussed above.
The gravestone at Old Commons Burial Ground in Little Compton, Rhode Island, shows a birthdate for Job of 1696, and a death date of 1727. This gravestone also contains the birth/death years of his father, William; grandfather, John; and son, Jeremiah; all dates tie to the grandfather/father/son of this Job Briggs.[5] Another gravestone, specific for Job Briggs, in the Briggs Lot at Little Compton, shows his death as March (illegible) 1727, at age 30.[6] This gravestone ties his birth in 1696 to his death in 1727.
What likely added to confusion and uncertainty about Job Briggs' death date was his reported children, many of whom were born after 1727. Coupled with there being a different Job Briggs who married a Mary, and who also lived in Rhode Island, it seems to have been difficult to separate them. According to both sources above, the following known children were born to Job and Mary Briggs:

Children born at Little Compton:

  • Oliver, b 1716; m Catherine Wilcox, Abigail Latham
  • William, b 1718; m Abishag Records
  • Joseph, b 1720; m Ruth Coe
  • Jeremiah, b 1721; m Anne Taylor
  • Deborah, b 1723; m Michael Sherman
  • Bathsheba, b 1724; m Job Hunt
  • Abigail/Elizabeth, b 1726
  • Walter, b 1728
  • Lovet, b 1730

Children born at Portsmouth

  • Job, b 1732, died young
  • George, b 1734
  • Elizabeth, b 1735
  • Mary, b 1738/9
  • John, b 1739 (listed in source as Job, but in RI Vital Records as John)
  • Ann, b 1740
  • Hannah, b 1741, died young
If Job Briggs died in 1727, certainly Lovet and the following children could not be his. If he died in 1739, it is doubtful Hannah is his child either. Whose children are these?
There was a Job Briggs, born in Portsmouth in 1658, who died in Little Compton in 1733; he had a son, Job Briggs, who was born about 1700. Job Briggs (1700) married Mary Coggeshall in 1731. The children shown above, from Job (1732) through Hannah, were all born in Portsmouth and likely were the children of this couple instead of the Job of this profile.
Mary Briggs, and Walter and Lovet Briggs, children of Mary, were baptized at United Congregational Church in Little Compton, Rhode Island, March 5, 1743-4.[7]. Based on the baptism date, these sound like they could be the youngest two children of this profile's Job and his wife, Mary. Since no father is listed with the baptism, one can presume that Mary was widowed or single. Perhaps the birth year for Lovet, especially, was incorrect in the Vital Records. It remains a mystery.

Conclusion

Job Briggs died in March 1727, most likely. It is uncertain who died in February 1739, or perhaps it was an error. There appear to be no sources to support a 1769 death date for him. The children attributed to him by the Beekman and Cutter sources are for a different couple - likely Job Briggs (born in about 1700) and his wife Mary (Coggeshall).

(Birth and Marriage)

Job Briggs was born to William and Elizabeth (Cook) Briggs on August 3, 1696, in Little Compton, Rhode Island.[8]

Job married Mary Tallman about 1715/16.[2][4][9]

Research Notes

A wife Mary (Coggeshall) Briggs (1694-1769) was added to this profile, without sources. Considering his wife Mary (Tallman) Briggs (1695-1769) was apparently still living in 1731 when the marriage is said to have occurred, it is likely Mary Goggeshall is attached to the wrong spouse.

  • The incorrect wife was removed from the profile in March 2023, but note that all of the children listed on this profile who were born after Lovett have Mary (Coggeshall) Briggs (1694-1769) listed as their mother. Her profile is now attached to a different Job Briggs (1717-), but the children are not attached to him. Perhaps they were added to this profile when Mary C was added, and should now be moved to the other Job.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Job by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Job:

I would also question this profile's Will having been proved on March 4, 1727. By proving it means the person is deceased however this profile for Job Briggs was still having children so couldn't be dead and hence the will wouldn't by proved. Again, there must be a second Job Briggs.

The death date on the Find A Grave headstone is clearly marked as is the age of Job at 30 or 31. It may well be that is a different Job Briggs on the headstone than that of the Job Briggs profiled here.

Briggs-3897 and Briggs-1316 are not ready to be merged because: While it appears that these two profiles are indeed duplicates, I feel an unmerged match at this time will help eliminate extra work later with completing the post merge clean up with all information being agreed upon rather than having to select who is correct and who is not.

Briggs-3532 and Briggs-1316 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, marriage and son. without sources for -3532 it is hard to defend the difference in death date.
