Biography

Ebenezer was born on 17 June 1806 in Wareham, Massachusetts. He was the son of Joseph Briggs (1782-1855) and Hopee (Benson) Briggs (1782-1836)

Ebenezer married Lucy D Maxham on 6 May 1830 in Middleborough, Massachusetts.^[1][2]

In the 1850 census Ebenezer (age 44) was in Lancaster, Erie, New York, United States.^[3]

Ebenezer Briggs was a community leader in Lancaster who dealt widely in the purchase and resale of land. He bought the property at 5483-5485 Broadway from George Bruce in 1867, retaining ownership until his death. Among his other holdings was a tract on Sport Street, north of Broadway, which contained the community’s race track. In 1873 the new Lancaster High School was erected on the site of the race track, which had been donated to the community by its owner.

Ebenezer's wife Lucy died in 1856. Ebenezer married secondly Elizabeth Maria, widow of John Lindsey.^[4] In the 1865 census Ebenezer (age 57) was in Lancaster, Erie, New York, United States.^[5]

Ebenezer died at age 67 on 17 January 1875 in Lancaster, Erie County, New York. He is buried in Lancaster Rural Cemetery in Lancaster, Erie County, New York.^[6]
