Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Henry Briggs III was a Virginia colonist.

Henry was born about 1635 in Charles City County, Virginia. He is said to be the son of Henry Briggs and Margery Hills, this is unconfirmed.

Henry first appears in records on 1 February 1655/6 in Charles City County.[1] On 3 February 1657 Henry Briggs and Gabriell Briggs were witnesses to a deed made by Mrs. Elizabeth Hacker for the sale of property to Daniel Baudovin and George Marshall of London.[2] [3] On 3 June 1662 Henry Briggs was granted administration on the estate of Gabriel Briggs, deceased, in Charles City County, Col. Edward Hill being his security. The relationship of Henry and Gabriel Briggs is unclear. Boddie (Southside Virginia Families) suggests Gabriel may have been Henry's brother or possibly his father.[1]

Henry is found in Surry County, Virginia, prior to 5 November 1662, on which date he appears as a member of a jury in Surry; he continued to live in Surry county until his death in 1686.[1]

Marriages & Children

Henry Briggs married first about 1661-2 in Surry County. Mary, widow of John Washington, and who had been married previously to Richard Blunt and Charles Ford. No marriage record has yet been found, however Mary and Henry Briggs were granted 250 acres of land on 6 April 1671 in right of Thomas Blunt and Richard Washington (b c 1660), orphans and the only known children of Mary by her previous marriages. Mary's marriages to Charles Ford and John Washington were relatively brief. The earliest appearance of "Mary Briggs" is on 31 January 1662/3, when she witnessed a document made by James Mills. Her last appearance in Surry County records is on 5 March 5 1677/8 when Henry Briggs and Mary his wife transferred all right to a tract of land sold by her son Thomas Blunt to Thomas Drew. Mary was dead by 5 July 1681, when Henry Briggs and Margery his wife deeded land to Thomas Blunt. Children of Henry and Mary Briggs:[1]

  • Henry Briggs, b 1662-3
  • Charles Briggs, b 1664-5
  • Samuel Briggs, b 1672-3
  • George Briggs, b 1675-6
  • Mary Briggs

Henry Briggs married second Margery, widow of John Gilliam of Henrico County before July 1681 in Surry County. They had no known children.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Henry by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Henry:
