Jesse attended business school in New York and he was a dedicated member of the Darien Presbyterian Church and served 41 years as a Deacon (1890-1931) and 8 years as an active Elder (ordained on 6-14-1931) until his death.
Jesse was a merchant and owned a general store in downtown Darien, GA. He also owned property in the Ashantilly Community. At one time he had a contract to ship "Sand Pears" and/or "Hood Pears" to a New York market. He assigned his two sons, Gene and Legare to locate, gather and prepare them for shipping. They gather the pears in an old Model "A" truck, individually wrapped them and boxed them ready for shipping via railway. In route to New York the train had trouble in North Carolina and while repairs were being made the entire shipment of pears sat there and rotted. They did not endever to make additional shipments after that. (As told by a family member.)
Jesse Alexander had artheritis really bad in his later years died from puss pockets on his bronical tubes--pneumonia. He was crippled from the artheritis so badly they had trouble getting him flattened out enough to go in his coffin. He is buried in St. Andrews Cemetery, Darien, McIntosh Co., GA.
First-hand information given to me, Betty Britt by Jesse Alexander's son-in-law, Charles Stebbins in mid-1990's.
