Biography

Religious Confirmation: 1766 Jerusalem (Red) Church, Stony Run, Albany Tp, Berks Co, PA.

Occupation: farm, mill, forge.

Note: #N312.

Notes

Note N312.

F may mean Frederick; one record also shows "Martin" as middle name.

Reputed hard drinker.

This couple are not ancestors of Elva BROBST, but are often confused with her line, perhaps due to his middle initial F.

Didn't serve in Rev.War.

He had 175 acres & grist mill Albany Twp Berks Co, taxes 1780 on 175 acres, 1 horse, 8 cows were £37.5.0.

With brother Michael operated BROBST grist mill & also the Union Forges, both on Pine Creek; primary operator of the grist mill until death 1792, when brother Michael took over. The Union Forges were a small charcoal furnace and two forges (kiln and chimney). Their brother Valentine may also have been involved.

Their grist mill on Pine Creek had been built 1786 by Jacob GUTH. Johannes F. and Michael operated it for about a decade and passed it on to their children. A local map in the mid 1800s calls it the DAUBERT and FETHROLFF's Mill, later LONG's Mill. Was converted from water power to electricity 1905, ran till 1960. Then became a butcher shop! Being refurbished 1999, stands on the S bank of Pine Creek just off Pine Creek Rd (off Hawk Mt. Rd) below "the Pinnacle", on the road to Eckville. Serves as a guest house, is registered as a national historic landmark #T814, "BROBST Gristmill.".

From 1788 Johannes F. was taxed on 266 acres NW corner Lynn Twp Lehigh Co near KISTLERs & ECKENRODEs, not far from his father's place & one mile from the Jerusalem (Red) Church.

1790 census shows him living Lynn Twp. Bill Brobst says he moved into Philip Jacob BROBST’s house at the mill on Kistler Creek at Fetherolf’s Bridge — that is, the Johannes F. BROBST b. 1750 who married Barbara STAMBACH lived in Philip Jacob's house with Johannes’s brother Martin b. 1747 (our ancestor), and Martin operated the mill across the street; Bill has a stone from the foundation of that mill. This Johannes F. operated the other mill. (?).
