Alexander Brock was born 12 May 1823.[1] and was baptised 10 June 1823 at Kirkliston, West Lothian, Scotland.[2]
He arrived in Tasmania with his father John, mother Jean and brothers Henry and James Millar on the "Edward Coulston" on 10 October 1833.[3]
Alexander travelled back to Scotland in 1846 at the age of 23 years to visit his aging grandfather and other family members.[4]
He married Elizabeth Clarke in 1853.[5]. A notice in the Family Notices of The Argus[6] said, "MARRIED. By special license, at the residence of the bride's father, on the 28th inst, by the Rev. Irving Hetherington, Alex. Brock, third son of John Brock, Esq., of Melbourne, to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Lewis Clarke, Esq., of Bolinda-vale."
Alexander had extensive property interests in the Romsey area as well as Shepparton, Yark, Avoca, Charlton, Deniliquin NSW and the Janefield, Bundoora, Thomastown and Preston area. The first of their family were born at "Overton", Bundoora.[7]
He and Elizabeth built a large home in Preston in 1862 known as 'Oak Hill' where the remaining members of their family of nine were born. Each time there was a birth an oak tree was planted. Alexander became a Justice of the Peace, and unsuccessfully stood for Parliament. He laid the foundation stone for the Epping Presbyterian Church on 5 November 1867. He was a trustee of the Janefield Presbyterian Church, his wife Elizabeth laying the foundation on 10 January 1861.[8]
They had nine children, including a son, Arthur Phillip in 1862.[9]
On 20 November 1866 Alexander bought the Doreen property of 188acres for 300 pounds 16 shillings. This is thought to be the only property in Victoria remaining in Brock hands.[10]
Alexander Brock died suddenly at Oak-hill, Preston in 1871, aged 48.[11] on 7 December 1871.[12][13] He was the "son of the late John Brock, Feq.. of Kirliston, Linlithgowshire, Scotland.[14] and Jean Simpson[15] [16] He died on 7 December 1871[17]
