Sir Henry Irving, born John Brodribb, was an famous English theater manager. In 1895 he received the honour of knighthood. No English actor had ever been knighted before. He had two sons: Harry Brodribb Irving, b. 1870 and Laurence Sydney Brodribb Irving, b. 1872.
He was a cousin of poet W.H. Davies. As a child, he lived with his aunt, Mrs Penberthy, at Halsetown in Cornwall.
A license was issued for the marriage of John Henry Brodribb, a bachelor of the Parish of St. Mary Marylebone, Middlesex, and Florence Fanny O'Callaghan, a spinster of Saint Mary Abbotts, Kensington, Middlesex, was issued on July 6, 1869.[1] The marriage ceremony took place at St. Mary Marylebone on July 15, 1869, and the officiant was F. Braithwaite. John is shown as "comedian." His father was Samuel Brodribb, Gentleman. Florence's father was David James O'Callaghan, Surgeon. The witnesses were E. C. Morgan, Wm. Montague, J. I. Toole, and Eliza Cross.[2]
Henry Irving died at Bradford, West Yorkshire, on October 13, 1905, and is buried in "Poets' Corner," in the South Transept at Westminster Abbey.[3]
