Biography

My natural grandmother, Marguerite claimed to be French Indian. Her father's name was Oscar (Probably Robert Oscar) Bromagin, and her mother was Cora E. Chelf.

Marguerite identified herself as "French Indian". However, exhaustive research finds no verifiable French ancestry in her patrilineal or matrilineal lines. She is listed on the 1900 census as the child of Cora Chelf and Robert O. (Oscar) Bromagin.

However, at 13 yrs old she is found to be living with the family of Walter Jones, in St Joseph, MO. When I research Walter Jones, his maternal ancestry goes directly back to Alexander MacGillivray, who was a leader of the Creek Indian tribe, and descended from Scottish, French and Native American stock. I have NO PROOF that Walter Jones was the natural father of Marguerite, nor do I know for sure WHY she was sent to live with that family, but I share my research for those interested.

I have been trying to decode Marguerite's secrets for years. She led a complicated life, which few knew the details of. After having three boys, she gave a fourth up for adoption. She married at least twice, and became estranged from her own sons. Although she claimed to be "French Indian" I find no French in her heritage, other than a Frenchman she was sent to live with as a child for awhile. Why she was sent there, and whether or not it is a clue to some secret parentage, have evaded me.

Her own grandmother, although raised in Louisiana, appears to be Scotch Irish, although many Louisianans at that time were interesting mixes of cultures and nationalities. I welcome ALL to help unravel this mystery.
