John Brome held Baddesley Clinton (he purchased the manor in 1438[3][4]), Lapworth Hall in Lapworth, and property in Warwick, Warwickshire.[1][2]
Career
He was a lawyer who served various magnates and Henry VI.[5] For Henry VI he held a position in the royal treasury.[6] In December 1450 he was ejected from the post of Chamberlain of the Exchequer.[7]
Marriage and Children
John married Beatrix Shirley, daughter of Sir Ralph Shirley, Sheriff of Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire and Joan Basset.[1][2] They had three sons and four daughters:
Nicholas, born about 1450[1][2] and died in 1517: he married first Catesby, of Lapworth, and secondly Elizabeth Arundel. Their daughter Constance Brome married Sir Edward Ferrers. [8]
Joyce, who became Prioress of Wroxall Abbey, Warwickshire[1][2]
Death
John Brome died shortly before 2 November 1469.[1][2] He was assassinated as he was hearing Mass at the Carmelite church in London by John Herthill, steward to Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick,[9] apparently because of disputes over land which led to a brawl.[10] He was buried at Whitefriars, London.[1][2] He made a deathbed will in which he forgave his son Thomas who had smiled when he saw him run through by John Herthill.[10]
Descendants
A number of John Brome's descendants in the next century were recusants.[8]
