The following obituary was published in the South Australian newspaper, The Burra Record, on 4 July 1894:[3]

THE LATE MRS. JOHN LEWIS. It is our painful duty this week to record the death of Mrs. John Lewis, which took place at her residence, Kooringa, on Tuesday morning last at the age of 47 years. alter a long illness, which was endured by patience and Christian fortitude. The deceased lady was born in London in 1847, and was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Brook, Super- Vicar of Excise, of Bristol, and sister of the late Mr. James Brook, of the firm of Way and Brook, solicitors, of Adelaide. At the age of six years she sailed for Australia, accompanied by her mother, brothers and sisters, and landed in Port Adelaide in December 1853, by the ship Cotfield, and in 1877 (sic) she married Mr. John Lewis, coming to Burra to live immediately afterwards, where she has resided ever since. Universal regret was expressed on all sides when the sad news was made known, and as a mark of respect shutters were put up to the windows of every store in the town. Of Mrs. Lewis's generosity no one can speak too highly, and her kind deeds towards the poor will never be known. She was always ready to assist all classes and denominations. By her death the Church of England has lost a faithful communicant, and it owes many thanks to her generosity. On July 12, 1893, the foundation stone of St. Mary's school-room was laid by Mrs. Lewis, The deceased leaves a husband, four sons and two daughters to mourn their loss. To-day at 2 o'clock a special service will be conducted in the Church, after which a procession will be formed to march to the Kooringa Cemetery.
