Elizabeth Brooks was born 13 March 1809 in Tazewell County, Virginia, the daughter of Richard Brooks and Margaret Clancy.
From History of the Brooks Family, 1933 "Betty bore a name and reputation unexcelled and though a small woman weighing less than one-hundred pounds possessed much determination. As an illustration. At the battle of Droop Mountain her son, Joseph F. Hager, a lieutenant in the Union was wounded and it is inferred captured by the Confederates. Immediately after this battle she on horseback made the hazardous journey through the lines from her home in Boone county to Richmond and return. Her way was across the Alleghenies and she was forced to lay out in the wilds some few nights."
Elizabeth Brooks married Reverend Benjamin M. Hager on 23 Nov 1833 in Boone Co., West Virginia.
Elizabeth Brooks Hager passed away 27 May 1890 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. She is buried in the John Beane Cemetery, Sissonville, West Virginia.[1]
