She was the sister to Lucinda Brooks. Her first marriage was to Jesse Simkins. it was through this marriage that the land for Oakley Park was obtained.
Jesse died intestate and on October 28, 1822, Behetheland Simkins and Whitfield Brooks were appointed as administrators. John Simkins was ordered by the court to have an inventory done and it was completed on November 30, 1822.[2]
When she and Daniel married he then built Oakley Park in Edgefield, SC[3]

On March 15, 1823 the following distribution of slaves in the estate of Jesse Simkins was held and the following, became the property of the widow.:[8]
