Possible births on Cheshire BMD for Thomas BROOKS - NO/19/058 in 1857 in Northwich and NO/19/069 in 1858 in Northwich. Note on marriage records to Mary Porter - no father is shown for Thomas Brooks.

Mary Porter married Thomas Brooks in 1878 but she isn't on the 1881 Census, either as a wife with Thomas or as widow. However there is a Mary Brooks age 19 and born in Anderton but she is married to a Samuel Brooks. Samuel is about the same age that Thomas would be and also born in Witton. They lived at 16 Winnington Court, Witton. We think this may have been a genuine census mistake as both Thomas and Mary were illiterate.

It is believed that Thomas Brookes left Mary Porter to live with Alice Amelia Horrigan (nee Robinson) after her husband Cornelius deserted her. It is known Alice died at 62 London Road, Thomas Brookes is shown living there still in 1901 - just after her death - with the two known children that Alice had with her new partner. Thomas and Alice are not believed to have married, although their children carried the names "Horrigan" and "Brookes" at different times.
