Biography

William Brooks b. 1790, chose Henry Blagrave Glenn, husband of his aunt, Frances Satterwhite Glenn, as his guardian in 1808.

Will Book C-1, page 192 William Brooks, minor made choice of Blagrave Glenn as gdn. Sec.: Silvanus & William Walker Greenville Co., SC Deed Book H, pg. 238 #2931 [Mar] 28, 1809 Blackgrove Glenn (Greenville Dist.) to Sylvanus Walker (same) Walker is security for Glenn for $1,000 to Laurens Dist Ordinary Court for performance for Glenn as guardian of William Brooks, son of Bartly Brooks deceased, as security against default, Glenn sold a Negro woman Susanna & her child Mary, all my household & kitchen furniture, & all my plantation utnesis; sale void if Glenn pays the bond and Walker is relieved as security for $1,000.00 on Mar. 15, 1811 "when" William Books comes of age "for redemption of the Negroes &c.", sale remain "in force" if Glenn defaults on guardianship or on the bond. Signed "Blagave Glenn" Witness Polly Glenn & William Richards, wit. oath April 1, 1809 by Polly Glenn before Philip Evans, JP recorded April 3, 1809. Greenville County, SC Deed Book 1, pg. 3202 or Number 3201 page 27 Aug. 10, 1811 Silvanus Walker says on Mar. 28, 1809 "Blagrove" Glenn (Greenville Dist.), guardian of William Brooks, mortgaged to Walker following property: a Negro woman Susannah & her child Mary, all his household & kitchen furniture, & all "my" plantation wenteals" because Walker was security for the guardian bond: on July 15, 1811 Brooks "being of full age" gave Glenn a receipt indicating Brooks received all money due to him from Glenn as his guardian & Brooks gave "acquitance" of all claims: so Walker "requits" all claims to the mortgage. Signed Silvanus Walker Witness: Silvanus Walker, Sr. & William Walker wit. oath: Aug. 10, 1811 William Walker before James Kilgore JQ recorded Sept. 1811, book I, page 27 1830 census - Spartanburg, SC pg. 235 Blagrave GLENN William BROOKS - age 30-40 Blagrave Glenn married Frances Satterwhite, daughter of John Satterwhite. In John Satterwhite's will, dated 14 Feb. 1807, Newberry Co., SC, he mentions his deceased daughter, Mrs. Brooks, and her son William Brooks. Confirming William Brooks as a son of Ursula Satterwhite. 1835 William Brooks appeared on 1835 Estate of Usley Brooks in Laurens County, SC as a buyer. There is also a Mariah Brooks (another buyer). The estate was administered by Bartlett Brooks and the final settlement was split 1/3 each to: Maria W. Brooks; John Crocker in right of his wife, Elizabeth; and it is unclear where the remaining third went, but I think it went to Bartlett, Jr. 1845 Abbeville District Wills and Bonds Box 13, Pack 275 JOHN BROOKS Est. Admnr. Jan. 13, 1845 by STERLING WILLIAMS, WILLIAM BROOKS, BARLETT CHEATHAM, John McIlwain bound to David Lesly Ord. Abbeville Dist. sum $4,000.00. Left Widow Mary A. but no children. Died in fall 1844. Mary A. was dtr. of Sterling Williams the admnr. William Brooks was father of JOHN BROOKS. The widow is without the state and her father is her agent.
