Biography

This profile describes Benjamin Brooks, the prospective husband of Hannah Avery. No evidence has yet been presented to determine his birth date, location, or ancestry.

Per the Avery genealogy, Hannah Avery married 26 Mar 1744, Benjamin Brooks of Norwich.

The Avery genealogy states that July 29, 1746, Jonathan Avery deeded certain land to his daughter, Hannah and her husband, Benjamin Brooks; January 7, 1750, Benjamin Brooks deeded back to Jonathan Avery the land that he had given to Hannah, his daughter, deceased, the wife of Benjamin Brooks; Jonathan Avery then deeded this land to his beloved grand-daughter, Eunice, child of his daughter, Hannah Brooks (Norwich Deeds, 10:50. 420). This sequence coincides with the death data for Hannah (Avery) Brooks in 1748, thus confirms the attached spousal and descendancy relationships with Hannah (Avery) Brooks (1727-1748) and Eunice (Brooks) Welch (1745-1827), respectively.

Also, A Benjamin Brooks served in the war from May to Dec, 1755; also from April to Dec, 1756; also in the campaigns of 1759 and 1760 (French and Indian War Rolls, 1:69, 70 & 2:127, 136, 194).

Benjamin and Elizabeth (Avery) Brooks had 2 children, baptized at First Church of Norwich:

  1. Eunice Brooks, bapt. 3 Feb 1745
  2. Phineas Brooks, bapt. 31 Jan 1748

The death date of Benjamin Brooks is not evident, estimated at approximately 1760.

Is there any reason to think Benjamin could not have been the son of Henry Brooks (Brooks-11189) and Eleph Chappell (Chappell-1704) ? Is there another Brooks family in New London County at the appropriate time with a Benjamin named as a son? I would admit this isn't absolute proof, but the Avery genealogy doesn't say 'born in Norwich' but 'of Norwich' which is only about 8 miles away (give or take) from New London, where the Henry & Eleph Brooks family were located. (I currently live in Norwich, so I'm quite familiar with the geography.)
