From the Sandusky Clarion. (republished in the Huron Reflector on 30 May 1831.)
The following communication was sent us for publication, by a son of the deceased:
Solemn Accident.
On Sunday the 8th inst. as the sloop Humbird, of Conneaught, was coasting the south side of Cunningham's Island, the small boat, which was in tow, broke away, and in coming about to catch it, the main boom gibed, and knocked two men overboard - Henry Ellithorp, and Col. John Brooks, owner and master of the above named Humbird, and resident of Salem, Ashtabula County, Ohio.
Mr Ellithorp, as he went overboard, caught hold of a piece of rigging and was saved; but Mr. Brooks being a good swimmer, started directly for the Island, a distance of not more than fifty rods, and swam about ten minutes, and sunk to rise no more. Search will be made to find the body for the purpose of having it taken to Salem, to be interred. He has left a wife and nine children to mourn his untimely exit. He was one of the earliest settlers in Ahstabula county. His age was 47 years.[1]
