Biography

Unknown origins. See profile of husband Thomas Dickinson. A 15 Apr 1640 marriage at St. Peter, Leeds, England of Jennett Brooks and Thomas Dickinson has been mistakenly assigned to this couple. Exactly at that time Thomas was serving a sentence of slavery (having already been whipped) in Massachusetts. Whatever Jennett he married, it was NOT the Brooks of Leeds, England.

She was buried 1 FEB 1686 in Rowley, Essex Co., Massachusetts

I don't believe that page adds any reliable information to what's already on this particular profile.

Unsourced FAG incorrectly shows her as 'Brooks', see the first paragraph above showing that as wrong.

Thank you for supporting WikiTree.

Might we review her date of birth?

Is there a reason to believe the woman who married "before 1640" was born 1626; she would have then been only age 14. --Gene

Several merges with birth entered as unknown, 1626 and/or 1620, none of the dates being sourced.

Brooks-7425 and Unknown-147959 appear to represent the same person because: Thomas Dickinson of Rowley, Mass is proven NOT to be the man who married Jennet Brooks 15 Apr 1640 at West Riding, Yorkshire (see Dickinson-137). He was sentenced to slavery from 3 Dec 1639 to 1 Sep 1640 at Rowley, Mass so was NOT sailing back to England during that time to get married. The surname of the wife of Thomas Dickinson of Rowley is unknown. Please discard Brooks-7425 unsourced profile upon merge, thanks.

This is a duplicate of Unknown-147959, wife of Thomas Dickinson of Rowley, Mass.

However, this is not the Thomas Dickinson who married Jenett Brooks in West Riding on 15 Apr 1640 (see this record Yorkshire, West Riding : Leeds : St Peter : : "Parish Register" database, FreeREG (https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/597e2267f493fd1b4c058360 : viewed 12 Jan 2022) marriage Tho. Dickinson to Jennit Brooke 15 Apr 1640)

See Thomas' profile; he was sentenced to be "severely whipped" and sentenced to slavery on 3 Dec 1639 at Rowley, Mass and was released from slavery on 1 Sep 1640. So, I don't think they gave him a vacation to sail back to England to be married. This profile information should be dropped upon merge.

Do you have any valid source that shows that Jennett Brooks is the wife of Thomas? Or any source that shows their marriage in Leeds? Other than FAG and internet trees.

I just did a search on Ancestry and found in "West Yorkshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1512-1812" a marriage labeled Tho Dickinson 15 Apr 1640 Leeds, St Peter, Yorkshire, England. The image of the marriage record on that date shows a Thomas Dickinson married a woman named "Brooke" but her first name is hard to read more like Joniect. Could be this Jennett but seems a little shaky to me.

The change came about as a result of a huge merge effort. One of the profiles had Brooks as last name. If no one comes forth with a decent source. I will revert it to unknown. Ah I see Katherine already made the change.

I do not know who changed the names on this lady. It was not I. In future, whoever it was, please provide source and evidence before major alterations to significant ancestors.
