Biography

John was born about 1715. "John Brooks, Jr. b. about 1715, married Jane May, daughter of John May, from Virginia to North Carolina then to Georgia." Source: "Brooks and Kindred Families," Page 12. AND "Descendants of John Brooks Sr," Ch 4, page 329. [1]

About 1775, John Brooks Jr and Jane May Brooks moved with their family to Georgia. They settled on land that was included in Wilkes County when it was formed in 1784. Prior to that it was formed from "Indian Lands." [1]

Children of John Brooks Jr and Jane May:

  1. John Hanna Brooks, Born about 1748, Chatham County North Carolina died 1811, Jones County, Georgia.
  2. Issac Brooks, born 1751, Chatham County, North Carolina,
  3. Joab Brooks, born about 1753, Chatham County, North Carolina; died 6 Sep 1804
  4. Baalam Brooks, Born about 1755, Chatham County, North Carolina
  5. James Brooks, born about 1758, Chatham County, North Carolina: died before 1828, Married Phalbia Falby Cobb.
  6. Micajah Brooks, born 25 December, 1761, Chatham County, North Carolina; died 15 June 1862 Polk County, Georgia. [1]

Five sons of John Brooks of Virginia served in the revolution. They were Allen (Ballam), Joab Brooks, John H. Brooks, James Brooks and Micajah Brooks and they were all Revolutionary War Soldiers. After the war, they all received land grants in Georgia for their service as documented in "Roster of Revolutionary Soldiers in Georgia" page 41. [2] [3]

In the Tax List of Wilkes County, Georgia, shows Jane May, widow on 200 acres of land on Briar Creek. [1]

Research Notes

"Descendants of John Brooks Sr" incorrectly lists Rev James Brooks born in Jasper County, Georgia, as son of John Brooks Jr, page 329. This Rev James Brooks married Elizabeth Traylor. [1] The correct James Brooks was born in Chatham County, the same as his siblings, and he married Phalbia Falby Cobb.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Brooks-21885 and Brooks-990 appear to represent the same person because: same family that has been duplicated and merged

LaDell (Whitsitt) Montgomery: I concur with the proposed merger of Brooks-990 and Brooks-10817. You confirmed that they had 3 facts in common. Then you noted that Brooks-10817 has no other facts and no sources. It seems that we have 2 profiles of the same person. I have added some sources and facts for Brooks-990 and I will continue to work his profile.

I concurred with this merger last January.

Brooks-990 and Brooks-7421 appear to represent the same person because: Here's another John Jr son of John Esq

Brooks-10817 and Brooks-990 appear to represent the same person because: There is only one John Jr, son of John; the Brooks & Kindred source has this same wife, looks like a dupe to me
Brooks-990 and Brooks-10817 do not represent the same person because: I am rejecting this merge because other than name, birth date and wife’s name being the same on both, the rest of the info doesn’t match. I feel that the info on Brooks-10817 may not have proper documentation.

I have concurred with the proposed merger. John Brooks Jr is my 4th GGF. We need to hear from David Crump before the merger.
