Napoleon Bonaparte Broward was an American river pilot, captain, and politician. He was elected as the 19th governor of the U.S. state of Florida.
Napoleon Broward was the son of Napoleon and Mary Parsons Broward and was born in 1857 in Duval County, Florida. His parents farmed along the St. Johns River.
Napoleon Broward was a river pilot on the St Johns River in Duval County. He gained a reputation for being a good captain and pilot and was selected by the Democrats to fill the post of sheriff in Jacksonville in 1888. This was the start of a political career that culminated in being elected governor in 1905 and is best remembered for his efforts to drain the everglades.
He married twice. His first marriage was to Georgiana Kemps. The couple had one son, Napoleon B. Broward, III.
He married next, Annie Isabell Douglass. They had nine children.
Napoleon Broward died in 1910 and was interred at Evergreen Cemetery in Jacksonville, Florida. [1]
