Thomas was born about 1533 in Swan Hall, Hawkedon, Suffolk, England. [1] He owned a substantial country estate called "Swan Hall" about a mile from town. This estate was then several hundred years old, built of oak, covered with plaster and elaborately carved. An elegant stained glass window adorned the grand hall where the coat of arms was displayed. Thomas Browne was buried here Dec. 23, 1590.

Thomas Brown's father Christopher Browne, also of Swan Hall died at Hawkedon on May 31,1574. His father Christopher Browne II, also of Swan Hall, married Anne_____of Suffolk County, made his will and died at Bury St. Edmunds July 3, 1538. His parents were Christopher Browne, Esquire of Stamford and Tolethrope County, Rutland, and Agnes of Beduingord County, Norfolk. His will, dated 1516 was proved at London in Feb. 1518.

Beyond Christopher Brown are 4 generations of ancestors all named John Brown. John IV was a draper by trade in Stamford, married to Agnes_____who died in 1470. An alderman in 1448,53,62, he died between 1462-70 and is buried by his wife's side in All Saints Church in Stamford, England. His father John III of Stamford, draper, Merchant of the Staple of Calais and Alderman of Stamford in 1414,1422,1427, was married to Margery who died Nov. 22,140_. He died July 26, 1442 and they are both buried in All Saints Church which was erected at his expense. This church is the principle ornament of Suffolk County.
