Biography

Alice was born in 1866 in Camberwell, Surrey. Alice married Joseph Burroughs in 1884. Their first child, Joseph Sidney was born in 1886 followed by William in 1889. In the 1891 census, her husband Joseph was listed as a Saw Sharpener and she as a wife without occupation. They lived in London, at 20 Sandover Rd Camberwell*. In 1892, William passed away aged 3. This was the same year that Alice Emma, their only daughter was born. Tragically, in 1898, their eldest son Joseph Sydney passed away in the latter half of the year, followed by Alice's own husband, Joseph just a few months later. Alice had Alice Emma (6) and Alfred Frank (2) to support and was also pregnant with another child who was born in June 1889 who she called William. In the 1901 census, Alice is listed head of the house, her occupation being a charwoman, with a 9 year old (Alice), 5 year old (Alfred) and 2 year old (Walter) that she supports. They had moved to 15 Camden Grove North Camberwell*. By the 1911 census, she is now Alice Lackington 4 (LLC cleaner office) married to Arthur Lackington 46 (bookmakers pressman) living with her two sons Alfred 15 (engineers lad) and Walter 11 (school) at 20 Unwin Rd Peckham. They were married in 1803 per the census.

In 1920 Arthur died and in 1922 Alice Lackington, now 56, married John W Bourne.

  • Camberwell is in Southwark, bordering Lambeth.

From http://edithsstreets.blogspot.com.au/2010/04/thames-tributary-earl-sluice-peckham.html it appears that Sandover Road is now under the lake, presumably the lake under Burgess Park. None of her homes or streets exist still - presumably because they were very poor/slums and have been knocked down.
