Biography

Susannah (Susan) Brown Elliott was born in South Carolina around 1790.^[1] In the 1860 Census, however, it was recorded that she was born in Wayne County, NC.^[2]

She came to Kentucky at some time before her marriage in 1822.

1822 marriage

Johnson Elliott married Susanna Brown, February 7, 1822 in Casey County..^[3]^[4]

1850 U.S. Census

In Casey County Kentucky, Johnson Elliot, age 68, born in Pennsylvania was a farmer with property worth $4000. Susan Elliott, age 60, was from South Carolina. We don't know if these are children or spouses because that column was not filled out, but also in the household were 6 others, all born in Kentucky. They were Susan Elliot, age 26; David Elliot, age 25; Gran G. Elliot, age 21; Brown Elliot, age 19; George Elliot, age 17; and Esther Ann Elliot, age 13. Johnson stated that all the sons were farmers. Esther, George, and Brown had attended school that year. ^[5]

1860 U.S. Census

Susan Elliott, age 62 (If she was 60 in 1850, she should be 70 now), born in Wayne County, NC (in 1850 the record said it was SC) is head of the household. Brown Elliott, age 28, was a farmer in Casey County, Kentucky, with real estate worth $2200 and property worth $1200. The record suggest he was born in Wayne Cty, NC, but that is probably a mistake. George, age 26, is also a farmer. ^[6]
