John Newton Brown was born 3 November 1904 in Nassau, Bahamas - the youngest son of Thomas Benjamin Brown and Barbara Adeline "Addy" Whitehead Brown.

He married Valencia Rowena Sawyer, daughter of Percy Owen Sawyer and Dolly Ellsworth Bethel, 18 June 1929, in Nassau.
