Elizabeth, known as LIz, was born at home on the family's farm near what is now Rutherford, Ontario, the eldest of four children of Annie Thompson and James Charteris Brown. When she married Matthew Coubrough in 1883, her parents sold her a 50-acre farm which had a two-room log house. They later mortgaged the land to build a second storey to house their increasingly large family.
