Arthur was born in 1865. He was the youngest son of John Brown and Elizabeth Fish. [1]
In 1887 he married Mary Ann Bethia Durrant. [2] [3]
As of 1887 he was captain of the Melrose football team (Wellington). He also trained the St. James football club, and was a noted coach of athletic runners in Wellington. [4]
He passed away 15 November 1904 age 39, resident of 68 Daniel Street, and is buried at Karori Cemetery, with Mary Ann. He also worked as a bootmaker. [4] [5] [6] [7]
There were several John+Elizabeth couples in New Zealand. The marriage notice names him as "youngest son of the late John Browne of Wellington", which hopefully narrows it down to this particular one couple!
The marriage notice said "Melbourne and Dunedin papers please copy". Dunedin might refer to his brother John (although he was already dead by this time); and his mother did spend time in Melbourne in 1863.
One ancestry-com tree says Arthur was kicked out of the family for "marrying down", so that may explain why there has been no other mention of his siblings or parents in newspapers.
The death record is certainly the same person as the 1887 marriage, since they are in the same grave, and his wife's death notice gives her maiden name Durrant.
