Biography

Emma is my great grandmother.^[1] She was born in May of 1865 to John Terrell Brown and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" McGehee. She is listed with her parents on both: the 1870 Census^[2] and the 1880 Census^[3] in Louisa County, Virginia. She married Robert Payne on May 10, 1888 in the same area of Louisia County.^[4] The couple are listed with five children: Florence, Lula, Lemuel, Blanche, and Cassandra; on the 1900 Census.^[5] Emma passed away in October of 1947:
