Notes
Note N1025In the 1880 census in Osborne Co., Kansas he lists his father and mother being born in New Jersey rather then New York where he states he was born. History of Butler and Bremer County, Iowa,1883, Union Publishing Company, Springfield, Illinois. From Page 6. The first settler in the northern part of Albion was Jacob Brown, who came from Illinois in 1854 with his family, and took a claim of about 1080, acres lying in Beaver and Albion townships. He remained about one year and then sold it to Elder Bicknell, a Baptist preacher. He then removed to section 4 to what is called the "Horse neck", and purchased a farm. He remained on this ten or twelve years, when he removed to Franklin county. He is now in Kansas. Brown was a Methodist preacher, and was considered a good man. In the 1840 Census for Waddams Grove Precinct, Stephenson Co., Illinois is a Jacob Brown with 2 males 5-10yrs old;1 male 15-20yrs old; 1 male 20-30 years old; 1male 50-60yrs old and 1 female 15-20yrs old;1 female 20-30 years old;1 female 40-50 years old.. Do not know at this point if this is the same Jacob Brown who is father to Henry Brown( My great grandfather). The 1850 census where he was in Adams, La Salle County, Illinois, clearly states he was born in New York. According to the History of Butler County, Iowa in the small town of New Albion. A village by this name was platted about 1856, in the northern part of the township, lying in sections 3 and 4. Quite a number of parties were interested in its project, among them were Jacob Brown, Dr. Wright, Clifford Dawson and Chesley and John Barker. The post office at this point was established a number of years ago. The U.S. official documents establishing the post office at New Albion, under the title of Swanton: also a commission for Jacob Brown as the first postmaster, the office being kept at his house. The following documents were filed in Osborne Courthouse, Osborne, Kansas: Final Duplicate Receiver's Receipt, No. 5808, Application No. 6421, Homestead Receiver's Office U.S. Land Office June 2, 1883. Received of Jacob Brown the sum of four dollars being the balance of payment required by law for the entry of South East Quarter of Section 30 in Township 6 ( Lawrence Creek township) of Range 13, containing 160 acres under Section 2291 of the Revised Statues of the United States. .00 fee, .00. Osborne Co., Book H Page 440, Indenture dated May 11, 1884, Jacob Brown and his wife Mariam Brown of Osborne Co., Kansas sold to Chester L.(Hard to read might be S.) Brown of Osborne Co., Kansas for 0.00 all of North half of East half of South East quarter (N 1/2, E 1/2, SE 1/4) Section One (1) in Township Six (6) south of the Base Line of Range Fourteen (!4), west of the 6th Principal Meridian containing forty 40 acres more of less. Dated and signed by Jacob and Mariam Brown on May 11, 1884. On April 7, 1885 and recorded on May 21, 1885 Mariam Brown (only party of the second part) bought lots in Town of Bloomington, Osborne Co., Kansas from Eva J. and M. B. Gilden husband and wife for 0.00 Lots Twelve (12) and Fourteen (14) in Block Six (6) in the town of Bloomington. The foregoing was in Book I, Page 317 of Land Deeds in County Court House in Osborne, Osborne Co., Kansas. In tracing the chain of land transaction on this it does not show Mariam Brown sold these lots but they were disposed of my Tax Foreclosure. Bloomington is in Tilden Township. Since the April 7, 1885 land transaction is the last transaction I could find and since they were sold by Tax Foreclosure, it would seem Mariam abandoned the lots in Tilden Township. Perhaps Jacob had died by April 7, 1885, how ever I could find no evidence that he did and assume they must have moved from Osborne County until this time I have been unable to determine to where they moved or where they died.
