Joseph N Brown was born about 1816 in Switzerland, Indiana, United States, son of Amos Andrews Brown (1780 - 1863) and Ruth Hannah (Nelson) Brown (1789 - 1869).

Joseph married Jane Sebastian (1822 - 1905) on 23 Oct 1847 in Switzerland.^[1] Their children were:
