Biography

Kate Eliza Brown was born at Northgate Street, Beccles, Suffolk on November 17, 1857. [1] Kate was the daughter of Francis Brown and Eliza Smith. She was the eldest of seven children. Francis, her father, was a tailor. By the time she was three years old Kate was living with her aunt and uncle at Southrepps, Norfolk. [2] Her parents had moved to Shoreditch, London with Eliza's brother Ernest who was born in 1859. The family settled in Shoreditch and their five younger children were born there. It is likely that Kate did not know her immediate family very well, as she was still living with her aunt and uncle in Southrepps, Norfolk in 1871. [3] By this time her grandmother was also living with them.

By 1881 Kate was living in Wortwell and working as a general and domestic servant to the Goulder family. [4]

The next year on February 28, 1882 Kate married William Helsdon Larner at Southrepps, Norfolk England.[5]
They they lived at Pine Farm in Bodham, Norfolk and had two children, William born in 1884 and Alice born in 1889. The 1891 census shows the family living in Bodham.[6] and they were still living in the same place in 1901. [7]

Kate with her daughter Alice

By 1911 Kate and William's son had married and left home, but their daughter Alice, who never married was still living with them.[8]

Kate died on October 4, 1922 at Pine Farm, Bodham, Norfolk. She was 64 years old.[9] Her probate record shows that she left £2030 [10]
