Biography

Benjamin was born either in Orrington, Maine or Wellfleet ,Massachusett in about 1820. Records appear in both towns. The exact date has not been recorded. Wellfleet records claim he was born in 1821. He died 16 Nov 1887 and the age recorded on his death certificate is 67 years and 1 month which would have meant he was probably born in Oct 1820.

Benjamin Brown was a master mariner as documented in various census records. He was associated with a number of ships that sailed out to Wellfleet Harbor in the mid to late 1800’s. The most prominent one was "The Walter B Chester". Which was built in Bath, Maine as evidenced by research done by researchers at The Maine Maritime Museum on March 14, 2002. These records state that Benjamin Brown was the schooner's Master (Captain).

In about 1852 land on the west side of Commercial Street in Wellfleet, Massachusetts was deeded to Benjamin and Martha. They subsequently built a home there. This home remained in the family until the death of Benjamin's youngest son, Chester in 1944.
