Biography

Benjamin Brown Jr. was born on 1 January 1743, in Louisa County, Virginia (newly-founded in 1742), the son of Benjamin Brown, Sr., and his first wife Anne Elizabeth (Hescott) Brown. His full siblings were William, Agnes, Bartlett, and Lucinda Brown. Their mother died in 1744, possibly in childbirth with Lucinda as she is not listed with the living Brown children later. Lucinda also died as an infant.

Benjamin Jr.'s father remarried within a year to Sarah Thompson, who was a niece or cousin of Anne (Hescott) Brown. She had two children at their Louisa County VA farm: Lucretia (1746) and Barzillai Brown (1747). In 1747 the family moved from Louisa County to Walnut Level, Virginia, and then on to what would become known as "Brown's Cove," in rural Albemarle County (formed in 1744), Virginia, where six more children were born.

At the time of his second marriage, Benjamin Brown, Sr., made the following land donations to his three sons by his first wife, Anne Elizabeth (Hescott) Brown:[1]

  1. “…for good will of a fatherly love to (son) Bartlett Brown land of quantity unknown in the fork of the Moorman’s River.”
  2. “…(same) to son William Brown land on both sides of the North Fork of Moorman’s River.”
  3. “…to son, Benjamin Brown; land in Louisa co. on both sides of the North Fork of Moorman’s River on the Louisa Co. line..."

"Benjamin Brown, the eldest [sic - he was the 3rd born son]. He and his brother William were executors of their father's will, and had their portion and residence in Hanover and Louisa [Virginia]." [2]

Benjamin Brown Jr. married Susanna Jarman, b: after 1732. Their land was located in Louisa and Albemarle Counties, Virginia. He became Protestant Christian minister.

During the American Revolution Rev. Benjamin Brown Jr. was a Protestant clergyman in the Continental Army, a member of Light Horse Harry Lee's troop.

He died between 1 Feb 1781 when he wrote his will and 5 April 1781 when it was proven in Hanover County, Virginia, USA. [3]
