Biography

Birth:

Ir was previously listed that Anne was born 1 December 1687 in Marcus Hook, Delaware, Pennsylvania. The date does sound reasonable, BUT what is the source for this date? Does anyone know where this date is coming from? Is there an actual source? Until actual source is listed we need to go with early to late 1780's. First child was born about 1705 so marriage took place 1703-1705 time frame.

  • PARENTS AND LACK OF PROOF at this time

Parents have been removed, since the only documentation are a few UNSOURCED family trees that list no source

At ONE TIME, many did list her parents as Honor Clayton and James Browne who married 8 June 1679 in Burlington, New Jersey colony. The family moved to Marcus Hook, just south of Philadelphia in William Penn's Quaker-friendly colony about 1683. If anyone has any 'concrete source besides a family tree', then please do let us know.

PLEASE NOTE that in the comments below:

  • There is no mention of Ann in the 1715 will of James Brown. He lists children William, Jeremiah, Marjary, Daniel, James, and Mary.

Marriage

Since first child that we are aware of that was born to Robert MacKay, Sr. and Anne Brown is Robert MacKay, Jr. born about 1705 Freehold, Monmouth, New Jersery, we have to 'estimate' that they married around 1703-1705 most likely in a Quaker ceremony around Freehold, Monmouth, New Jersey.

CHILDREN

Children (all believed to have been born in Freehold, New Jersey)

  • Mary (Mackay) Robinson
  • Robert MacKay, Jr.
  • Margaret (MacKay) Job
  • James MacKay
  • Zachariah 'Zachary' MacKay
  • Hannah MacKay
  • Leah MacKay
  • Elizabeth (MacKay) Job

NOTE: Robert's last child, Moses was from his 2nd marriage to Mary (Unknown).

DEATH

WE now know that Robert MacKay remarried Mary ? between 1720-1724 and this Mary was the son of Moses MacKay born about 1726.

  • - she (Mary) signed the marriage certificate of Robert's daughter Mary Mackay & George Robinson dated 14 Feb 1726.

NOTE: This witness to Quaker marriage PROVES that Robert MacKay had remarried a 2nd time within the Quaker Church. Since this could not have happened IF there had been a divorce, his first wife, Anne Browne, must have passed away by this time. I rather doubt that Mary was pregnant before her marriage, the 'best guess' for Anne Browne's death was between the birth of Elizabeth Mackay who was born about 1719 and 1725 since Moses was born about 1726. Therefore, I list Anne (Browne) MacKay's death as 1719-1724 probably in Freehold, New Jersey.

Sources

  • Minutes of Nottingham Friends Meeting dated 1 Nov 1730 concerning the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Margaret to Joshua Job which reads '1.11.1730 Margaret McKay, daughter of Robert & Ann Brown of Milford Hd. Cecil Co. MD & Joshua Job son of Andrew & Elizabeth'.
  • Dee Ann Buck's Book 'A Tabulated Genealogy of the Family of Robert and Ann (Brown) Mackay Sr.' (Vol. 1, 1997 edition)

NOTE: The above Quaker minutes does PROVE that Robert Mackay was married to Ann Brown and did have children by her.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Ann by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Ann:

I just sent all the administrators a private message. Hopefully we can all work together and find the answers to these 'unanswered questions' and obtain some more 'actual sources' for both Anne (Browne) and Robert MacKay, Sr. and their children. Where we don't actually have a source, we need to say so. The main thing is accuracy and the 'facts according to the sources' as we know them TODAY. I've started a Jobe one name study/project here at wikitree and as most know the MacKay and Job family intermarried several time. Any who would like to help with that project, I would love to hear from you. Does anyone know if there is a one-name study for MacKay (that includes the family of Robert MacKay, Sr. and Anne Browne? If so, I would love to join it. Some of the comments listed below are very observant and to the point - THANK YOU!

Please see the various comments below on Ann’s parents. There appears to be no evidence that she was a child of James and Honor (Clayton) Brown, apart from an unsourced tree on the web - https://wc.rootsweb.com/trees/200631/I09955/-/individual - which is not an acceptable source for a profile of this date. The father was changed to Honor’s husband a year ago with no explanation, and there is a history of no, or different, parents being shown in profiles which have been merged to form this one.

Unless anyone has a good source for the relationship, I am proposing to detach Ann from her currently shown parents, with a short research note saying that she was previously attached to them.

Ann has now been detached from her formerly-shown parents. Thank you to [Granstrom-5|Erik Granstrom]] for doing this.

Michael, I agree with you and as 'trusted member', I've removed the parents until someone locates some type or proof or we have DNA confirmation. Thank you for your observation.

None of the following explains why Ann is attached to James & Honour Brown. It may (or may not) offer clues to finding answers.

The original Wiki ID Browne-1565 was created with parents identified as Augusta Zummak (Sasse-66) and Sarah Ullman (Wachtel-56)

-

Merged profiles for Brown-32226, Browne-2938, and Brown-7426 were created without attached parents

-

Merged in Wiki ID Brown-21242 was create with parents identified as Pekka Pekanpoika Kolehmainen (Kolehmainen-8) and Paul Henricsson Jonkka (Jonkka-6). Prior to the merge, the father was changed to James Browne (Browne-1261)

-

Father was changed from James Browne (Browne-1261) to James Brown (Brown-2470) in January 2019 with no explanation.

Shouldn't someone now detach the parents or explain why not?

Browne-1565 and Browne-2938 both appear to be the same Anne Browne. Both married to Robert Mackay. Thank you.

Brown-7426 and Browne-1565 appear to represent the same person because: I believe these two records reflect the same person, wife of Robert McKay and mother of Moses McKay. Thank you
