John Brown was born around 1845 in Ireland to parents James and Rebecca Brown. He moved to Canada sometime before 1861.
John was a seventeen year old laborer during the 1861 Canada Census. He lived in a log house in Egremont, Grey County, Ontario with his widowed mother Rebecca, and siblings James, Matilda, William, Ann, and Sarah.
The Brown family continued to live in Egremont, Ontario during the 1871 Census of Canada. The household included the widowed Rebecca (age 54) with her children, John (age 23, farmer) and Sarah (age 21). Also in the house were Rebecca Allan (age 7, student), Thomas Daniels (age 18, farm labourer), and Samuel Queen (age 27, schoolteacher).[1]
During the 1881 Canada Census, John was a 36 year old Irish farmer who belonged to the Church of England. He resided with his widowed mother Rebecca in Egremont in Grey South District of Ontario. His brother, William Brown, and his family lived a few houses away from him.
The following year John married Mary Oswell at the age of 38. The wedding took place on August 17, 1882 in Mount Forest in Wellington County, Ontario, Canada.
John died on April 10, 1915 in Holstein, Ontario at the age of 72. He was a married farmer and driver. Cause of death was pneumonia, which he had for one week. Burial was in Maplewood Cemetery.[2]
