Timeline

Birth: Daniel was born June 6, 1824 in Fayette County, Kentucky[1] to James B. Brown and Jane Runyon[2]. He had three younger siblings, Mary, Lydia, and Joseph, and several older half siblings.

Married Mary N. Jones on November 1, 1849 in Marion County, Indiana. [3]

1850 Census: "Daniel Brown," 26, was living in Brown Township, Hendricks County, Indiana with his parents, James B., 74, and Jane, 60, siblings Mary Jane, 24, Lydia Ann, 22, and Joseph J., 19, and his wife Mary N., 20. He was listed born in Kentucky, working as a farmer, and unable to read or write. [4]

1860 Census: "Daniel D. Brown," 36, was living in Brown Township, Hendricks County, Indiana (Brownsburg Post Office) with his parents, James B., 84, and Jane, 68, wife Mary, 29, and children Scott, 7, Jane, 5, Minerva, 4, William D., 2, and Eliza Ann, 1/12. He was listed working as a farmhand, born in Kentucky. [5]

Enlisted in Company H, 2nd Indiana Cavalry as a Private on November 1, 1861. [6]

Discharged on October 9, 1862. [7]

1870 Census: "Daniel Brown," 46, was living in Lincoln Township, Hendricks County, Indiana (Brownsburg Post Office) with his wife Mariah, 39, and children Winfield, 17, Nancy, 15, Manerva, 13, William, 12, Eliza, 10, Henry, 8, John, 6, Florence, 4, and Daniel, 2. He was listed working as a farmer, real estate valued at $2,500, personal estate at $625, born in Kentucky. [8]

1880 Census: "Daniel D. Brown," 55, was living in Lincoln Township, Hendricks County, Indiana with his wife Mary, 49, and children Henry, 18, Scott, 27, Ann E., 19, John, 16, Amanda, 14, Everett, 12, and David, 9. He was listed working as a farmer, had a weak back, born in Kentucky, both parents born in New Jersey. [9]

Died February 24, 1895 in Hendricks County, Indiana at the age of 70. He was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery in Brownsburg, Hendricks County, Indiana with his wife. [10] In his will, he left everything to his wife, and makes mention of a pension, supporting the notion of service in the Civil War. [11]

BROWN, DANIEL D., P.O. Clermont, Marion Co.; Farmer, Sec. 19; born in Fayette Co., Ky., June 6, 1824; son of James B., b. Aug. 23, 1775, d. March 29, 1861, and Jane Runyon, b. 1790, d. Oct. 20, 1863; natives of N.J.; settled in this county in 1824. Married Nov. 1, 1849, to Mary Jones, b. in this county, Aug. 18, 1830; ten children--Winfield Scott, Nancy J., Minerva Ann, W.L. Dayton, Ann Eliza, Henry E., John W., Amanda F., Daniel E. and David W.

Children

1. Winfield Scott Brown: Winfield, known also as Scott, was born October 3, 1852 in Hendricks County, Indiana. He was a farmer and laborer. He married Melvina Campbell and had two sons, Freddie (1882) and Daniel Cleo (1886). He died August 12, 1919 in Lincoln Township, Hendricks County, Indiana, age 66.

2. Nancy Jane Brown: Nancy was born about 1855 in Indiana. Whether she married or died is not known, but she was alive as late as 1870.

3. Minerva Ann Brown: Minerva was born March 11, 1856 in Brownsburg, Indiana. She first married Orlando V. Evans on September 10, 1879 and moved to Labette County, Kansas with his family. Orlando died August 17, 1880, presumably of disease, though the exact cause is not known. Whether they had any children is not known, but if they did, the child did not survive past infancy. After her husband's death, Minerva moved back to Hendricks County, Indiana, where she married widower Thomas Plummer on January 1, 1883. She became stepmother to his three surviving children, Mary (22), Dora (9), and Homer (7). They had two daughters of their own, Allie Ray (1883) and Flora Ann (1885). Minerva moved to Texas with her husband and daughter Flora's family in the late 1910s. Her husband died there in 1921, and she moved again back to Hendricks County, where she died on January 12, 1928, age 71.

4. William Lewis Dayton Brown: Dayton was born in March of 1858. He was a farmer, later a postal clerk at the railroad, and married Josephine T. Canary on February 18, 1880. They had a son, Roscoe Concklin (1881). After his wife's death some time between 1900 and 1910, he married Chlora Petticord on September 6, 1910. Dayton's death date is not known, but he was alive as late as 1930, living in Brownsburg.

5. Anna Eliza Brown: Anna was born May 1, 1860 in Indiana. She married George R. Cook on March 27, 1886. Anna and George had no children. Anna lived in Indianapolis and died there on May 15, 1927, age 67.

6. Henry E. Brown: Henry was born about 1862. He was alive as late as 1880 but whether he died or married is not known.

7. John W. Brown: John was born November 22, 1863 in Indiana. He married Martha M. Rushton on July 22, 1884. About 1886, he married Retta E. Jacobs. John and Retta may have had one child, but the child may also have been Retta's from a previous marriage. John worked at the railroads in Indianapolis and died there on June 3, 1922, age 58.

8. Amanda Florence Brown: Amanda was born March 16, 1866 and married William H. Berry about 1890. Amanda and William had three children: Edith M. (1891), Ruth N. (1892), and Urban (1894). The family moved to Indianapolis, where Amanda died on June 29, 1958, age 92.

9. Daniel Everett Brown: Daniel was born January 17, 1868 in Hendricks County. He was an iron moulder in Indianapolis before moving back to Brownsburg to become a farmer. He married Alpharetta Arbuckle on October 20, 1889. They had three children: Cleo (1898), Elva (1900), and Ruth (1906). Daniel died in Brownsburg on April 4, 1930, age 62.

10. David W. Brown: David was born December 18, 1870. He was an iron moulder in Indianapolis and died there of typhoid fever on September 20, 1910, age 39. He did not marry and had no children.
