William Brown was born in Ireland to parents James and Rebecca Brown.[1]
He left Ireland for Canada sometime before 1861.
During the 1861 Canada Census, William was a 21 year old laborer. He lived in a log house in Egremont, Grey County, in Ontario with his widowed mother Rebecca and siblings James, Matilda, Ann, John, and Sarah.
On March 16, 1871, at 26 years old, William married 22-year-old Jane Eddington. Their wedding took place in Toronto, Canada. He was a farmer living in Egremont while she lived in Normanby.[1]
The 1871 Canada Census took place soon after they were married. William was listed as a 27 year old Irish farmer who was a member of the Church of England. He and Jane lived together in Egremont in the Grey South District of Ontario.
The 1881 Canada Census listed William as a 40 year old Irish farmer. He was a member of the Church of England and resided in Egremont in the Grey South District of Ontario, Canada. He lived with wife Jane and children James, Oliver, Emma Jane, and Matilda. His brother John and mother Rebecca lived four houses away (as seen on the microfilm of the original census record).
William, 48, was still a farming in Egremont during the 1891 Canada Census. He lived with wife Jane and children James, Oliver, Emma J., Matilda, John, Sarah, Margaret, Elizabeth, William, and newborn Mary.
The Brown family continued to live in Egremont during the 1901 Census of Canada. The household included William (age 58, farmer) and Jane (age 51) plus their children James (age 30, farmer), James's wife Martha (age 23), Oliver (age 28, farmer), Emma J. (age 26), John (age 22, farmer), Sarah R. (age 20, student), Maggie (age 17), Lizzie (age 15), Willie S. (age 11, student), and Agnes E. (age 9, student).[2]
