Rebecca was baptized 1 July 1832 at Preston Capes, Northamptonshire. She was the daughter of John & Hannah Brown. [1]

In early 1856 (or possibly late 1855), she married Eli Carvell. [2]

They emigrated to New Zealand in 1856 aboard the Emma Colvin departing March 1856, as did Rebecca's own family. [3]

Rebecca and Eli Carvell adopted a child Louisa Maude Newton and brought her up as Mary Ann Carvell. They did not have children of their own.

"Mrs Rebecca Carvell, wife of Mr Eli Carvell, died at the residence of her husband in Stephenson Street yesterday at about 1 o'clock. The deceased was one of the oldest residents of Blenheim, and at the time of her death was in her seventy-sixth year. She came out to the Colonies in company with her husband in the Emma Colvin, and landed in Nelson in 1856, coming on to the Wairau about five years later, where her home has since been. She was, until her health failed, prominently connected with the Methodist Church, with which body she was an earnest and effective Christian worker. About two years ago, when visiting the Marlborough Exhibition, she was seized with sudden illness, and had been unable to leave her home since. Of late she had been so weak and frail as to need constant attendance, and yesterday, during the brief absence of her adopted daughter from her room, she quietly passed away. About a year ago Mr and Mrs Carvell celebrated their golden wedding. The husband, who survives, is at present very ill in the Wairau Hospital. There are no children, but Mrs J. Simson is an adopted daughter.
