Biography

Catherine was born in 1808 and passed away in 1859. She is the daughter of Jacob Brown and Nancy Thompson.

Married Elijah Smith Dec 1824 in Washington County, Tennessee.

Married John Wiseman 14 Dec 1854 in Oregon.

Catherine Brown was born in Tennessee, married in Washington County, TN; moved in 1840 to Washington County, Iowa Territory, In 1852 the family set out for Oregon. Unfortunately cholera was very bad on the Oregon Trail that year. Elijah contracted it and died near the last crossing of the Platte River on the 3rd of July. His body was wrapped in a feather mattress and wagons were run over the shallow grave to deter scavenging animals from disinterring it. His widow Catherine and six children, including Marena Ann SMITH, continued on to Oregon. Catherine married a second time to John Wiseman, 14 Dec 1854, and she died 15 Jan 1859 in Linn County, Oregon
