Biography

1776 Project
Private Timothy Brown served with 1st New Jersey Regiment, Continental Army during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Timothy Brown is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A015916.

Timothy Brown was born 30 April or May 1762 in New Jersey [citation needed].He was possibly the son of Joseph Brown.

In 1776, Private Timothy Brown served in Captain Richard Cox's Company, Colonel Elias Dayton's Regiment, for the State of New Jersey, during the Revolutionary War, based on the Daughters of the American Revolution Ancestor record, # A015916. [1]

In the 1783 Revolutionary War Rolls, he is noted as active, serving in the 1st New Jersey regiment of Col Ogden, in July 1782.[2]

Records show he enlisted April 1780 and served as a private in Captain Richard Cox's 3rd Regiment of the New Jersey line, under the command of Colonel Elias Dayton. After this (date?) he was then transfered to Capt. Alexander Mitchell's Regt of the New Jersey Line, Colonel Mathias Ogden.

He is noted for participation in the Battles of Monmouth, Springfield and at the seige of Yorktown, Virginia.

Timothy was discharged at Little Brittan, New York, on 5 June 1783, with his discharge signed by George Washington and is in his Pension File #S35786[3] His pension file shows he received the Badge of Merit given to soldiers with more than three years of service to the cause of the revolution.


Timothy began the process of applying for a pension on 2 June 1818 while residing in Franklin County, Indiana. Within his pension file, a document dated 9 Oct 1820 [4] gives the value of his property as $104.75, as well as a listing of livestock and household items and their value. On this document, he states the following[4]:

"I am a farmer by occupation and I am old and infirm and much afflicted by a lameness in my left leg and thigh which renders me unable to labor for my support."

His age is given as 58 years and his wife's age as 72 years.

First Marriage

Timothy married Sarah (Sallie) Martin on 17 January 1788 in New Jersey.They had one daughter, Nancy b. 1789, who reached maturity - perhaps there were other children who did not live. Sarah died 5 April 1832 in Franklin County, Indiana.[citation needed]

Second Marriage

He married 2) Linderann Martin on 11 November 1832 in Franklin County, Indiana. Linderann was born around 1748 and died 16 September 1838 in Indiana[citation needed]. There were no known children borne to the 2nd marriage.

Residences

He is listed on the 1806 Tax Rolls for Warren Co, OH [5] and resided in Brookville, Franklin County, Indiana in 1820 and 1830. The 1840 Census of Pensioners, taken 1 July 1840, shows him as living with John Mitten in Clifty, Bartholomew County, Indiana.[6] He is listed as aged 89 on the 1850 US Census for 20th Division, Lime Creek Twp, Washington County, Iowa and is living with his granddaughter Lucinda (Oliver) and her husband Henry Lowe. Probate

The probate record for Timothy Brown can be found in the Washington County, Iowa Probate Records 1849-1857, Vol. A, p. 183. [8] His death date is given as 3 January 1852 and his grandson, E.A.J. Oliver, was appointed executor.

Burial

Timothy was first buried in the Todd Cemetery, Franklin Twp, Washington County, Iowa, located on the farm owned by Abel Todd about one mile SE of Grace Hill. Around 1902 or 1903 his grave was located and the remains were put into a metal box. On October 19, 1903 a ceremony was held including a procession to the cemetery led by a band and a memorial service was held.His remains were taken to Lot A, the center of "Soldiers Circle," in Elm Grove Cemetery, Washington County, Iowa.

As the box was lowered into its new resting place, the band played "The Star Spangled Banner" then Taps was sounded.On May 30, 1908 a monument was placed on the grave in recognition of his service to his country during the Revolutionary War."
